Hayden Shapes' own guidance is 4–5″ shorter than your standard shortboard, but with 1–3L more volume than you'd expect — the Hypto's volume sits further forward, so it paddles and floats bigger than the raw numbers suggest.
Grom checkReviewers are openly skeptical of the marketing claim that it handles waves up to 8ft — the consistent real-world take is that it's at its best in 2–3ft surf. Push it into bigger, steeper waves and that same speed gets scary fast for someone still intermediate.

Grom checkStewart's standard glassed lineup (Funboard, Therapy Fish, and the rest) has real owner reports of delamination and fragile glass over time. If you want a Stewart shape without that tradeoff, Hydrocush is the line to buy — not their standard glassed models.

Common mistakeAssuming bigger is always better, the way it is with a beginner foamie. One experienced longboarder found the 9'6″ Magic Model sluggish to turn and preferred the shorter 9' — as your control improves, a slightly smaller board can be easier to ride well, not harder.
Grom check"Magic Model" isn't one product — Walden sells this same shape in glass, a premium composite, and this softtop-hybrid construction, at different price points. Most of the glowing reviews online are about the glass version's feel, not this one — the Softop trades a little of that for real durability, the right call if you're still going to fall on it a lot.
